Diaper of the Week #1-Valentines Pocket

I thought I would share with you some of my new diapers and maybe help some people begin to understand a little about the complicated cloth diapering world. This cloth diaper is a pocket style diaper which means that you put an insert(something like an old style diaper folded into a third). The outside layer is waterproof so you don't need any prehistoric covers. It does seem kinda bulky in this picture of Kierstin but I have changed the type of insert that I used and it isn't bulky anymore. So...here it is. I haven't had any leaks with it and it is made by Chloe's Toes which is a Work at Home Mom store(WAHM) that I found on www.hyenacart.com. If you are interested in WAHM wares check out the hyena cart to see just what is available. I have found some wonderful people and wonderful items that have sparked my interest.

I checked out the stuff from hyenacart. Seems pretty cool! So.......are you using cloth wipes too? Do you just use them dry or spray the babies butt with something? {LOL, that was really funny to write.} How is the cost comparable to disposables? That's just something I don't think I would ever want to deal with! What is the actually process like? Do you have a bucket to soak the diapers in until laundry time? Interesting...........

I actually just run them under warm water.

How is the cost comparable to disposables? -Initially the cost is fairly great. If you buy really good diapers you could spend anywhere from $15-20/each. SO...in each size you could spend about $180. There are also one size diapers(I have 5 right now)and they can be used for any size, so the cost of your entire stash could be $180. The great thing is that there is a high demand for resale...just ebay "fuzzi bunz" and you will see just how many listings there are, and that is just one brand. I have been told that there is a 70% resale value for diapers that are kept in good condition. That would mean that if I were to spend $180 on a stash, I could sell my entire stash for $126, thus leaving my cost only $54 for the entire threeish years of diapers. Also..we haven't seen any increase(maybe pennies)in our energy cost. Even with the CoMed hike.

That's just something I don't think I would ever want to deal with! `well like anything else you know what you can deal with. My mom cloth diapered my siblings so this didn't seem all that strange to me. And really...the cloth diapers now are not the prehistoric diapers that my mom was using with pins and such. They are great and really...really don't stink.

What is the actually process like? `the cleaning process for #1-I take the diaper down to a dry pail(just a small wastebasket)in my laundry room sink and leave it there to wait for wash. It doesn't stink. #2-I plop out the bm into the toilet and spray out the residue with my shower sprayer. I then spray the shower floor with bleach spray and take the diaper down to the pail. When I am ready to launder them I do them all at the same time. I use a hot/cold wash and medium temp dry.

Do you have a bucket to soak the diapers in until laundry time? `yes but it is not soaking them. I am not finding that I have any residual stink after they have been washed and don't really feel the need to pre-treat the diapers with any harmful product.

REALLY...the reason that I started doing this was b/c Kierstin had TERRIBLE diaper rash every day since she was born. She hasn't had a rash since using the cloth diapers and for us we find that it works. It is not for everyone just like breastfeeding, but it works for us. If you are interested...there is another website to check out but you have to register... www.diaperswappers.com

It is a cloth diapering co-op of sorts, but they have used baby clothes, new items, baby slings, WAHM stuff...and they are a good recourse for all things Homespun.

I have been reading more about this since you posted. If one of my kids had terrible skin problems, I would do it too! Anything for the munchkins! Do you just take along a plastic baggie for the nappy when you go out? It really does sound cool & not as messy as I expected {or as my grandma has described it}. Definitely seems to have changed a lot since "the good ole days". I guess I'm just thinking about Sienna's poopies & how they are like huge piles of mush. Not something I could just plop into the potty. Blech. She is almost out of diapers anyways. Maybe for the next one though....

Are they cheaper to sew yourself? Difficult? I know how to sew, ya know.....

Yes, or you can make or buy a "wetbag". They look very simple to make.

I honestly recommend getting a diaper in her size (I would think Large) and trying it now. You would be able to see just what to do with the dipes and decide if you want to work on a stash for next time. I could even loan you a Large that I have if you would like.

There are many patterns for sale on hyena. I am sure they aren't too hard but I am of course...well...domistically challenged in that area. You can also make your own wipes, slings etc. Really for someone who sews...you could start your own WAHM business and make some extra cash.
